MSN China has partnered with Renren, considered the Chinese equivalent of Facebook, to integrate the two companies’ social platforms.

Renren and Microsoft will share applications and services, including unified account log-in, synchronized content and the ability to find and communicate with friends.

Facebook, in which Microsoft owns a stake, is banned in China, though users can get around the firewall by using Virtual Private Network (VPN) services. Renren is not the only social networking site in China, but is certainly the largest with more than 124 million active users. The company went public in May, May, raising $743.4 million.

“MSN has always been very selective in choosing our partners in China to ensure we consistently deliver secure, reliable and innovative online services. Today’s partnership with Renren is another strategic decision we made to keep that promise to our users, as we benefit from each other’s competitive strengths and complementary user bases,” said Jiarong Chen, deputy manager for MSN China, in a press release.

Microsoft and the Shanghai Alliance Investment Co. co-founded Shanghai MSN in 2005.
