Automated spam systems aren’t directed at any particular cause or point of view, says company

Social networking site Facebook has apologised to environmental and other activists after the site’s automated spam filters prevented them from posting messages.

The company has sent an email to the activists denying that some accounts were blocked because of alleged censorship.

The email read: “Your account was mistakenly blocked from posting on Pages…These systems aren’t directed at any particular cause or point of view.”

The company with over 750 million users worldwide said that its system is not perfect and that changes are underway to avoid the repetition of such errors.

The company said, “However, no system is perfect, and ours occasionally make mistakes. We’re investigating the system that caused the block and making changes to help prevent future errors.”

According to the AP, which first broke the story, accounts of users including Pittsburgh-based Gloria Forouzan, who protests natural gas drilling, were blocked by Facebook.

Facebook said that “sensitive topics are not against our policies.”

It added, “Facebook is not — and has never been — in the business of disabling accounts or removing content simply because people are discussing controversial topics.”

“On the contrary, we want Facebook to be a place where people can openly express their views and opinions, even if others don’t agree with them,” Facebook said.

“It’s also incorrect to assume that in every case where a person’s account is disabled, or a piece of content is blocked or removed, it’s because of the nature of the content itself.”
