A Facebook-like social-networking site launched by the Mayo Clinic earlier this month is making it easier for individuals with similar health problems to connect, according to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.

The online community quickly accumulated more than 1,000 members after its July 5 launch. The site provides a conversational format in which individuals can ask one another questions and share information, and Mayo staffers keep it up-to-date with articles and videos about different topics.

This isn’t the first social-media-savvy move by the Mayo Clinic, which already has more than 200,000 followers on Twitter and claims to have the most popular medical-provider channel on YouTube. The clinic is a nonprofit medical-practice and research group with centers in Minnesota, Arizona and Florida, where more than 500,000 patients from 150 countries have been treated over the years.
