Five Ways to Lose Your Facebook Fans

Facebook is arguably the most favoured resource for companies choosing to delve into online marketing. However, while setting up your campaign is easy, making a success of it is less so. This is the reason why many businesses choose to employ the help of an online marketing company, or even a specialist social media agency. However, if you’re going to run your Facebook campaign in house, here are five reasons why fans might hit the ‘unlike’ button, and how to prevent yourself making the same mistakes.

Talking About The Company Too Much

The first thing to remember when executing a social media marketing campaign is that Facebook is about communicating. No one wants to read endless messages about what a great day the company has had or how fantastic a particular product is. They want information that is relevant to them and an opportunity to speak to the company on a personal and equal basis.

Although it’s fine to write the odd post about a new product or upcoming sale, if that’s all you do, your fan base will quickly fade away, or never form in the first place.

If you’re unsure of the right things to talk about, the services of a specialist social media agency, or even an online marketing company with a department dedicated to social media, may help.

Focusing On Getting Fans, But Forgetting To Focus on Keeping Them

There are a number of easy ways to get people to hit that ‘like’ button. You can run a competition, offer a discount code, or even create a game. However, once the competition ends, the code is used or the game gets boring, your virtual fan base needs a reason to keep on ‘liking’ you.

This means convincing people that the presence of your company is worth a place on their news-feed. Make sure to post information that they will value and enjoy reading and if you’ve run a competition, never end it quietly.

Offer those who didn’t win a consolation prize (such as a discount code). However, even a friendly message to thank them for entering can help. Whatever you do, make sure to add in a little note saying something such as ‘make sure to keep ‘liking’ us so you don’t miss out on any future competitions.’

Posting Too Often

This isn’t a mistake made exclusively by Facebook business users – it’s often a reason people lose their ‘friends’.

No one wants a new-feed that is flooded with messages from the same person or company. If they notice it, they will quickly be ‘unliking’ you.

Neglecting Your Campaign

While you can easily update your business page too often, you can just as easily fall foul of not updating it enough. Although social media may make up only a small part of a company’s daily tasks, in order to make a success of it, time must be taken out for it each day.

If your company is struggling to keep on top of the campaign, it may be worthwhile hiring the services of an online marketing company or specialist social media agency, to do the work for you.
