FENTON, Michigan — The city of Fenton’s Facebook page is garnering more friends since its marketing firm has taken over.
Last August the city’s Facebook page had about 1,500 “likes,” now — almost a year later and with some help from marketing experts New Moon Visions of Milford — the city has more than 2,421 “likes.”
Spokesperson Natalie Burg, of New Moon Visions, told the Downtown Development Authority Tuesday evening that the city’s Facebook page has seen a dramatic increase in the number of interactions from other Facebook users. Since last July, the Facebook page has seen a total of 972,585 post views — the number of times Facebook posts have been loaded into viewers’ Facebook newsfeed.
“That’s a pretty exciting number. And we have had over 2,000 feedback posts from outside users, that are either posting things on our page or … liking comments,” Burg said.
The DDA hired New Moon Visions in June 2010, and just last month extended the contract for another year, to create a branding campaign for the city to market itself to potential visitors. The DDA is paying New Moon a monthly fee of $5,008. There also is an additional cost of $21,700 that would be for the DDA to market its events
“I think this marketing program is really going to take hold and revitalize the downtown,” said Mayor Sue Osborn.
The marketing firm came up with the city’s “Be Closer” campaign, which has billboards, radio advertisements and even a website that is promoting Fenton, its downtown and local businesses.
Burg said the city’s website has steadily increased since this spring. The website, includes a business directory and calendar of events.
Both the website and Facebook page are used to inform residents about the city and upcoming events, news.
“When you go to that calendar and you see that there are 82 events happening in one month, that’s a great visual,” Burg said. “There’s stuff going on in Fenton.”
The city also has a Downtown Fenton Twitter account, which hasn’t seen quite the number of followers as its Facebook page, Burg said.
