Sold-out crowds were treated to a delightful fashion show last month with designs that embraced a range of cultures and bodies of all shapes and sizes. The 2022 CCAD Fashion Show took place at 400 West Rich which CCAD viewed as an ideal collaboration. Prior to the fashion show, CCAD explained the connection by showcasing many of the alumni who have gone on to find a flourishing home at 400 West Rich and surrounding areas, creating ‘a collaborative community center for the arts’.

Fashion show guests were invited to tour art studios and spaces of 400 West Rich before the show, and more art was on display at the afterparty. This year’s fashion show sold-out in record time and a second (sell-out) show was added. All ticket purchases supported student scholarships.

Nine designers—eight Fashion Design seniors and one Master of Fine Arts candidate had designs in this year’s show.

“This year’s fashion show featured a wide range of work with every student bringing something different to the table,” said Suzanne Cotton, chair of Fashion Design. “During the pandemic, the students were learning remotely, which forced them to tap into themselves for inspiration. As a result, each designer developed a unique, individual style.”

The looks selected by the jurors for the show represent a range of influences and construction techniques, from vintage ‘60s-era looks to Japanese “visual kei”-inspired goth streetwear, from “nude” designs that embrace the feminine form in all shapes to those inspired by traditional Guatemalan dress.

For the first time, all looks and all students presented to the jurors made it in to the show.

The designers for 2022 CCAD Fashion Show:

Ridhima Batra who describes her collection Kairava as ‘spiritual, elegant, feminine’ saying “I hope people appreciate that something intangible like spirituality can be translated into something artistic.”

Marilyn Brown who describes her collection Every Witch Way as ‘bewitching, relaxed, feminine’ saying “I used new techniques and I experimented with different patterning and draping techniques combined to achieve my desired results.”

Nat Della Selva who describes her collection NEIGHBORHOOD as ‘useful, textured, nostalgic’ saying “During isolation, people reconnected with their neighbors and leaned on each other for support. This experience reminded me of my childhood.”

Calix Jace who describes his collection Kinzoku no Akuma (Metal Devil) as ‘J-fashion, gothic, idiosyncratic’ saying “My creative process for this collection has been a few years in the making and I’m excited to finally show everyone what I’m capable of.”

Nicole Klein who describes her collection nood as ‘flirty, confident, sparkle’ saying “Bodies in all shapes, sizes and colors are beautiful and we should be able to show them off without having to worry about making others uncomfortable.”

Maria Mendoza who describes her collection Heritage as ‘colorful, avant-garde, chic’ saying “I never felt truly Guatemalan because I left at such a young age and grew up in the US. I felt that this collection is my way of reconnecting with my heritage.”

Skylar Rice who describes her collection ABIOGENESIS as ‘handcrafted, natural, eclectic’ saying “I developed a passion for natural design and gathering inspiration from the outdoors and the world around me that I had never really seen in my own work before.”

Austin Tootle who describes his collection Serene Queen as ‘seductive, vintage, fierce’ saying “Certain aspects of the collection are the shoulder pads in the coat to show a strong backbone, but once the coat is revealed, the sexy lingerie shows a vulnerable side.”

Crystal Zhang who describes her collection Metamorphosis as ‘avant-garde, flamboyant, lively’ saying ‘Metamorphosis not only happens through the whole collection but on each garment.”
