Vice President Mike Pence got a chilly reception in ski country this week when a multicolored flag stating ”Make America Gay Again” was draped at the end of the driveway of the home he is staying near in Aspen.

The flag was hung on a stone post by the daughters of the family who lives next door to the house where Pence is staying, a friend of the young women, Shannon Slade, told the Aspen Times.

Pitkin County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Buglione told the newspaper the couple living in the house first thought the Secret Service or law enforcement might question the family’s right to hang the flag, but they weren’t stopped.

After being told, ‘We’re not here to control your free speech rights,” the couple came out with chili and corn muffins and began feeding the agents, Pitkin County Sheriff Joe DiSalvo said.

“They’ve been really nice to us,” he added.

Aspen area residents are known to speak their mind no matter who comes to town. DiSalvo noted that when former president Bill Clinton visited Aspen in the mid-1990s, someone hung a sign that said “Inhale to the Chief” on a large spruce tree. The reference was poking fun at Clinton who acknowledged trying marijuana when he was a Rhodes scholar in England, but claimed he didn’t inhale
