Vice President Pence on Wednesday defended President Trump’s attacks on Attorney General Jeff SessionsJeff SessionsGOP senator warns Trump: Panel won’t take up attorney general nominee this year Trump discussing attorney general recess appointment with advisers: report Scaramucci promises more ‘dramatic steps’ on ousting White House leakers MORE, saying that they show the president’s “candor” and reassure other Cabinet officials that they’ll always know where Trump stands.

“One of the great things about this president is you always know you stand,” Pence told Fox News’ Tucker Carlson. “And I think what the American people like about this president is he speaks candidly, he speaks openly.”

I think one of the president’s virtues is his candor,” he said. “There’s no attempt to hide his feelings. His expressed disappointment here is very sincere and he’s said ‘well, we’ll see what happens in the future.’ But at least the American people know and every member of the Cabinet can know that you’ll always know where you stand with President Trump.”

Trump has carried on a public feud with Sessions since last Wednesday, when he told The New York Times in an interview that Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the law enforcement investigation into Russian election meddling was “very unfair to the president” and he would have chosen someone else to head his Justice Department had he known that Sessions would step aside from the probe.

Since then, Trump has repeatedly berated Sessions on Twitter, calling his credibility into question and referring to him at one point as “beleaguered.”

Trump’s comments have stirred speculation that he could be trying to force the attorney general to resign, though Sessions has indicated that he has no plans to do so.

The president’s affront on his own attorney general has also drawn fire from conservative members of Congress, who have urged Sessions in recent days to holdĀ his ground in the standoff with Trump.
