Models shows off the Jewel Toned range created by Rachael McCary

Call this new phenomenon Bodycon 2.0. Thanks to body proud and loud actors like Amy Schumer, Lena Dunham and a host of others, being a-okay with not be a stick figure is catching on with clothing designers, especially lingerie designers who are creating a new wave of undergarments that can be worn as the main event.

Case in point is the female owned and operated Jewel Toned, created by Rachael McCrary with the hopes that all women of every size will celebrate their curves and flaunt what they have. Not in Spanx or other compression torture devices either, but in stretchier, friendlier, more colorful, dare I say cuter cut designs that can be layered like a luscious cake.  These new pieces are meant to smooth and flatter without pain and shame, and can be under a garment or worn alone.

In fact, Amy Schumer and Lena Dunham both slipped into the Jewel Toned shapewear under their dresses for their recent Hollywood Reporter cover shoot.

Aubrey O’Day is another famous fan who posted her Jewel Toned photo on Instagram.

CEO of Jewel Toned, Rachael McCrary began her path of undergarment alchemy with her position with Victoria’s Secret and moved her way up to Vice President of Design at Maidenform, before launching Jewel Toned on her own in California.

McCary designs for every size in mind.

The premise was simple: Take a popular fashion silhouette and update it. Bodycon style and the ubiquitous “going to the club” bandage dresses were getting tired, but the smoother finished look was still desired. Also, the phenomenon of tattoos and more colorful ink, especially on Dunham and other stars, inspired Jewel Toned to ditch the flesh toned beige and get really colorful with the body-positive shapewear without the shame. This bright color effect with someone who has a full sleeve of tatts or a shoulder and chest motif works really nicely.

McCrary believes that every size is the right size, and she has turned the volume down on the compression factor so you aren’t wearing a resting bitch face because you’re miserable.

Even 65+-year-old Caitlyn Jenner is rocking body conscious clothing, so my attitude on this subject is if you feel you can rock it and be confident, go for it. Beth Ditto is out there wearing things I would not, but she owns it and ergo, she can pull it off. I’m a New Englander, a bit more conservative and older, so I like layering the pieces for different occasions, but I love the fact when I come home I can get down to my “undies” and it looks really good. I don’t need to change into yoga pants as the default.

The piece I was able to try was the Major Mini Dress, and I picked a neutral charcoal that goes nicely with a lot of colors.  Even their packaging is pretty, a black floral box that makes for a nice gift for mom.

This is the color I was sent, it’s a good neutral.

The Major Mini dress hit me at just above my knee, a good length too. It doesn’t ride up on the thigh like so many other body shaping slips do.  The Major Mini Dress boasts adjustable/removable straps, removable foam cups and a built in bra. It’s made of 88-percent nylon and 12-percent spandex, in sizes range from small, medium, large and extra large.
