The Story Behind Maria Borges’ Natural Hair at the VS Fashion Show

Today, Angolan supermodel Maria Borges hit the Victoria’s Secret fashion show for the third time, but it was the first time she wore her natural curls in the lingerie show. Unlike previous Victoria’s Secret shows, Borges decided to leave her hair extensions at home and celebrate her short, natural hair.
Earlier this year the 23-year-old cut her hair into a TWA for the Givenchy fashion show, and recently admitted she was unsure how the lingerie brand would receive her curls for the annual show. But she forged ahead, and she couldn’t be happier.
“I told my agent I wanted to walk in the Victoria’s Secret show with my natural hair,” says Borges. “I was nervous, but I had to do it. When they said ‘yes’ I didn’t expect it, but I was so happy!”

Her excitement was caught on social media, as she tweeted, “Are you ready for the 2015 @VictoriasSecret fashion show?! I’ll be rocking my Afro hair this year for THE show!”
Her biggest advice for women unsure about wearing their natural curls? “Be strong,” she says. “If you say you’re beautiful without hair and makeup, then they will believe you. It’s about being confident and always being yourself.”
The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2015 will be broadcast on CBS, Tuesday, December 8 at 10:00 p.m./9 p.m. central.
