This is the moment a thief with a lingerie fetish was caught on camera clambering up a pole in the middle of the night to steal a line of pink underwear.

Footage shows the man climbing up a telegraph pole at a car wash in Penwortham, Lancashire before removing the bras and knickers which had been strung up as part of a charity drive.

Staff at the Pristine Car Wash had no idea where the display had gone – until they looked at CCTV which showed the thief in action in the early hours of the morning.

Fetish: Footage shows the man climbing up a telegraph pole at a car wash in Penwortham, Lancashire

The owner of the firm, Craig Halsall, said: ‘We had a look through CCTV and at 2am you can see a man walking from the car park opposite, shimmying up the pole like a cat, and taking the whole line away with him.

‘I couldn’t do it and none of my lads could do it, so it’s someone who’s pretty skilled at climbing.

‘It’s bizarre why anyone would want to do that, and just hours before the launch event. But we’re not going to let it beat us – well be back with a bigger and better display.’

Footage shows the man walking on to the forecourt and heading straight for the telegraph pole, before climbing up and unhooking the line.

After pulling the underwear to the floor, he can be seen neatly folding up the line and calmly walking away.

The underwear was being used to promote Paint Penwortham Pink – an event to raise awareness of breast cancer and to raise money for charity Breast Cancer Now.

Businesses in the town went head-to-head to compete for the best display.

Car wash co-owner Louise Pratt, said: ‘I don’t think its sabotage, I think it’s some mindless idiot who must have a fetish for pink underwear.

‘Its a shame though, because it’s a really good event showing community spirit, and now we’ve been left with no display on launch day.

‘We’ve been all over the local area looking for the display, but he’s not dumped it anywhere.’

Organiser Linda Baldwin said: ‘For someone to do this to someone’s display is really quite sad.

‘Why do they think they can do that when people are trying to support charity? It’s just mindless vandalism.’

Lancashire Police said they were investigating.
