Fashion designer Stella McCartney and super model Cara Deleveingne paired up in a campaign to promote a new lingerie line to increase awareness of and support breast cancer victims. For the designer, the cause is personal. Linda McCartney, Stella’s mother and the wife of former Beatle Paul, died of breast cancer in 1998. The new selection of bras and panties the duo are promoting were developed to encourage women, including those who have had mastectomies, to feel good about their bodies in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month in October.

While death rates from breast cancer have declined in the last 25 years because of screening and early detection, the disease is still the most common cancer for women. Noting that while there is increased awareness “of the terrible disease, many (women) forget to take the steps to make the effort to detect it at its early stages, so I designed a set to remind women to consider their health and visit their doctor regularly,” explained McCartney. She wanted the line to look and fit great, as well as serving as an important healthy reminder.

The campaign features Delevingne wearing the sporty looking, lacy Alina Playing bra in fuchsia and forming a heart with her hands. “We were so thrilled when Cara said yes to this project because she represents a generation of young women that we are really trying to reach and catch the attention of,” McCartney noted. She explained that the 23-year-old model “brings a level of coolness to the campaign” and will help bring awareness and inspiration to a younger generation of women.

The other part of the campaign is the new Louise Listening Bra, with a name derived from Linda McCartney’s middle name. The bra is designed to be functional and practical, as well as sexy, for post-mastectomy patients. It features floral lace detailing, a teasing front zipper, a wide underband and deep sides that provide extra support and compression for post-mastectomy recovery.

McCartney explained that her goal was to bring something feminine and beautiful into a bra that addresses the fact that so many women deal with conflicting emotions when faced with the tragic reality of recovering from a double mastectomy. “We just wanted to make something that allows women undergoing this to have something to be proud of, something with no shame attached,” she said. The designer strived to create a bra that would let women know that it is still possible to “be feminine, have your sensuality, have all of the things that are attached to being a woman and that part of your body can still feel beautiful on the outside, as well as the inside,” Stella commented in her company’s press release about the specially designed bra.

The new lingerie line in the breast cancer awareness campaign that Stella McCartney, Cara DeLevingne paired up for, goes on sale Oct. 1. A percentage of the proceeds derived from the Listening Louise bra and the Alina Playing bra and panty set will be donated to the Linda McCartney Centre in England, the National Breast Cancer Foundation in the United States and Australia’s National Breast Cancer Foundation.
