She said it was also clear to her that women were not getting good feedback where they did shop.
“I don’t like it when you can tell they (salespeople) just wanted to make a sale,” Denault said.
After six years of shooting photos of women in lingerie, she said she knows what looks good on different body types.
“I’m tactful, but I’m blatantly honest with people. I’ll just say, ‘You know, I don’t think you should wear that. That’s probably not a good outfit for your body type. Let’s look for something different,’ ” Denault said.
She is putting that expertise to work. On Monday, she opened Vivie’s Lingerie Boutique in a Victorian home along Moorhead’s Eighth Street. The small boutique provides an intimate setting where women can shop for intimate apparel.
“I wanted a classy establishment. I’ve had a few men ask me if I’m carrying sex toys. I’m like, ‘No, we’re not getting into any of that stuff because it’s just awkward.’ I want people to come in here and feel comfortable,” Denault said.
The boutique carries lingerie, vintage dresses, swimsuits, purses, jewelry and shoes. She said most people tend to be concerned about their stomachs and their thighs, so she and store Manager Nadine Swee stocked the boutique with pieces that offer some coverage but will still make them feel sexy. They ordered all sizes as well, from extra small to 3X or 4X. They carry well-known brands such as Hanky Panky, Stop Staring and Betty Page, as well as a few European lines such as Sawren.
Swee said the boutique received rave reviews during its soft opening last week.
“Almost everybody who came in left with something, from a necklace to a dress. We sold a lot of dresses, which shocked me a little bit. They may have the vintage feel, but they looked good on every body type,” she said.
