“But the LFA is something special, a one-off supercar built with obsessive attention to detail that took a decade to go from concept to reality. They very rarely come up for sale and the last one we had on www.PistonHeads.com was priced at £440,000. Lexus never made anything like it before and never will again. For that it’s a proper hero car.”

He refused to criticise the BBC, saying that although there were some “dreadful people” but also some very “talented people”.

“It’s a great organisation, I’m never going to complain about it,” he said.

In good spirits, Clarkson posed for selfies with fans as he left Broadcasting House with Evans, in the passenger seat of the DJ’s red Ferrari.

Clarkson has promised Top Gear fans that his live tour with Richard Hammond and James May starting on Friday will be their best live performance yet after “many years of practice”.

08:46

“I’m going to spend the next six months with James and Richard on an aeroplane, with James it will be smelly. It will be good fun driving with these two.

“We have got six months, driving around doing live shows. We are starting our world tour this afternoon.

“It is the most badly organised, in three weeks we are off to Sheffield, then Johannesburg, then back to England, then back to Sydney, then South Africa, then Australia, then London…someone needs an atlas.”

08:39

Clarkson adds: “I’m going to do one last track of the Top Gear track, it will be very emotional.”

He will be doing the track for charity.

08:38

“It was very sudden,” says Clarkson on Top Gear sacking.

“You’d be a fool to jump into it [something new].”

08:37

Clarkson reveals he has “absolutely no idea” what the future will hold in terms of a new show but has “talked and listened” to people.

He denied that he was in talks with broadcasters, saying: “We’ve just been listening … I haven’t had a single meeting.”

“There are some dreadful people at the BBC but also some incredibly talented people,” said Clarkson

08:30

When asked about the last three unseen programmes, he said: “They were not the strongest, you will get to see them. They are being edited, but it will be someone else, the cleaner, maybe James and Richard [presenting them]. We had to buy cheap 4x4s, costing hundreds of pounds, another was classic cars to go on a classic car weekend, those films will be edited. They belong to licence fee payer so you should be shown them. For those who do like Top Gear there will be one last hoorah.”

08:26

“I’m not going to be a milkman, not with those early starts.

“It was very sad [to leave Top Gear].

“It was my own silly fault. I was at the BBC for 27 years and with Top Gear in its current incarnation for 12 years. It was my baby, I adored it, I paid attention to every little bit of it, I worked all the time on it, all through the night.

“It has left a big hole that needs to be filled.”

08:18

Clarkson says tour with May and Hammond will be “good fun”.

“I genuinely think it will be good fun. We are good friends. We have been able to make films without anyone’s meddling,” he says.

“We have done the films to put into it [the shows].

“We have got super cars, we will be racing Robin Reliants, we will be doing what we have broadly done for the last 10 years. It’s just called a different name.”

08:17

“Lexus LFA,” was the best car ever on Top Gear Clarkson says.
