PPL Park to host Lingerie Football League’s Philadelphia Passion in 2013

The Philadelphia Union will have a new co-tenant next year that hails from a professional women’s football league.

But there’s a catch. It will not be the brand of football that you might have initially expected.

The Lingerie Football League’s Philadelphia Passion are moving to Chester next summer. The two-time defending Eastern Conference champions will play home games on June 15 and July 13, both of which are Saturdays.

(See what I did there… okay, let’s move on.)

Those of you who follow the Passion know that the LFL has historically played a winter schedule. Next year, they will switch to the summer in order to try to get more attention.

Prior to this year, the Passion had played at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, N.J. You may know that venue better as the Sovereign Bank Arena.

(Yes, I know some things about the team. I don’t cover it, but you may have heard that this website does in some detail. To each his or her own, I say.)

PPL Park will be the second Major League Soccer stadium to host the LFL. The Chicago Fire’s Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill., was the first, hosting the Chicago Bliss last year.

The other 10 teams in the LFL play at indoor venues, with franchises in cities including Baltimore, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Omaha and Seattle.

On a more serious note… As for the rumored plans to launch a new professional women’s soccer league next year, I’ve heard nothing about there possibly being a team in the Philadelphia area.

The only markets known to be involved so far are Chicago, Seattle, Boston and northern New Jersey, and that was reported almost a month ago. If I hear anything, I’ll be sure to pass it along.
