NEW YORK 4 Dec 2012 Victoria’s Secret extravaganza – lingerie and stars
From all accounts, it is impossible to obtain tickets to the Victoria’s Secret annual designer lingerie extravaganza, so fans of one of the most popular fashion shows on the Planet will have to make do with a telecast of the event by CBS on Dec 4. The network can count on big viewer numbers because the brand courts controversy – its “Sexy Little Geisha” outfit is in the news – and because of the allure of both the brand’s models, the Angels, and of the lingerie. The allure has grown in the 17 years of the show. It will be enhanced on the runway this year by performances from Rihanna, Bruno Mar, and Justin Bieber.

Promoted as “your ticket to an exotic adventure” and part of the VS “Go East” collection, the “Sexy Little Geisha” outfit consists of a mesh teddy with “Eastern-inspired” floral print fabric on the bra cups and crotch, plus a coordinating (and removable!) obi belt. The Huffington Post reports that the outfit is criticized as reducing Eastern culture to a stereotype of exotic sensuality that could be offensive to religious, racial and ethnic groups.

The brand has another controversy in the making with its push-up bra for the gym. It is only a matter of time before fitness professionals begin panning it because support is more useful in the gym than a cleavage show.

The same publication revisited the first VS show, in 1995, noting the lack of exotic flair in the first collection. It points out that back then, VC lingerie was demure and there was no glitter.

Entertainment, as part of the fashion show, came later. Jay-Z, Kanye West, Maroon 5 and Nicki Minaj performed at the 2011 VS show. (WRITTEN OCT 2012)
