The eighth annual Shanghai Mode Lingerie finished on Tuesday with more than 50 lingerie and swimwear brands showcasing their latest designs at the two-day exhibition at the Shanghai Exhibition Center.

Meanwhile, the same venue also played host to a companion exhibition, Interfilière Shanghai, involving some 250 companies trading in textiles and accessories for lingerie.

After taking a close look at the latest fashions in lingerie and swimwear, the Global Times has unpicked the likely major trends in the industry for the coming spring/summer 2013 season.

Strong colors

For most lingerie brands, the tried-and-trusted basic colors such as ivory, pink and black won’t be going anywhere next season, while even bolder colors will also be making an appearance.

“Strong reds and strong blues, as opposed to pastel shades, will be the big trend for next season,” Xavier Martin, international director of Simone Pérèle told the Global Times. One of the latest lines of this French, high-end lingerie brand is “Heritage,” a vintage collection that pays homage to the founder of the company by re-working some of the best designs, augmented with fashionable elements de jour, such as wavy patterns and large floral features.

Shanghai-based Sorella has taken the country style of southern France as their signature look for the spring/summer 2013 season. Its designs also stress the use of strong and vibrant colors such as orange and olive green. “We’ve also launched lingerie in fluorescent colors for next spring and summer, bright enough to cheer people up after the long, frigid winter,” said designer Zhang Rujü.

For sexy looks, animal-skin pattern are still a hot choice, while pure red and black, and combinations of black and pink, and black and red are no less seductive. Such elements can be found in the new lines of Germany-based Je Dit, Italy-based Parah, and Shenzhen-based Eve’s Temptation.

A touch of luxury

A luxurious highlight at the show was a breathtaking hand-embroidered bikini produced by the German-based beachwear company Maryan Mehlhorn. The hand-embroidered 35,000 euro ($45,430) price-tagged item boasts large gemstones such as emerald, ruby and sapphire.

Besides the precious gemstones, there are also Swarovski crystals and rows of sequins on display in certain lingerie items. Parah, France-based Chantelle, Taiwan-based Lofan, and Eve’s Temptation are all playing up the “luxury” aspect in their latest collections on show.

In regard to beachwear, varieties of pink and red tones, as well as burgundy, are going to be big hits this season. “Mirror” prints, which produce a symmetrical image on both sides of the body and help show off a shapely waist, is one more highlight for the spring/summer 2013 trend.
