Lingerie Football League snaps up local

A BYRON Bay lifeguard and personal trainer is the latest local girl to be snapped up by the American Lingerie Football League.

Lauren Funnell, 24, was instrumental in the development of a women’s gridiron division in Queensland and has now been poached by the LFL in the US before the first local season got off the ground.

The women’s gridiron division in Australia was set up to introduce lingerie football to Australia and to prepare young athletes for the league.

Funnell said she had wanted to play for the US LFL from the first time she saw a game on television about five years ago.

The dream has now become a reality and she will will play with the Cleveland Crush later this year.

“I knew I was interested when I saw my first game, it was something completely different and the female athletes were all just so amazing looking,” she said.

“I wanted to play in the States, but it seemed like an unrealistic goal to start with, so I worked closely with the gridiron division in Queensland towards the launch of an LFL here.

“It has been a slow process and although teams for an Aussie LFL have been selected and training has commenced the league won’t officially launch until December this year.

“After we succeeded in getting the league to Australia I had the chance to visit teams in America and train with them.

“The visit led to an offer to play — I am very excited to be fulfilling my goals.”
