LINGERIE brand Kayser has been slammed for blaming rape victims after it tweeted that women “should know what to expect” when they’re invited on a date.

This morning Kayser tweeted: “If a guy invites you over to watch a movie, you should know what they’re expecting.”

The tweet has been met with hostility online, with people taking to the social media service to air their outrage.

Writer Clementine Ford replied to the tweet: “And if you’d decided to have sex with your friend, you know… she should have expected that.”

“Maybe they’re expecting you to watch Shawshank Redemption. You’re right. Be safe.”

Writer Helen Razer tweeted: “I will never again purchase your garments. And baby, I go through hosiery like there’s no tomorrow.”

“Seriously. This is insane. DO you believe that women have no sexual agency and men cannot articulate their own desires?”

Twitter user @JointDestroyer wrote: “I will not stand for sexism and misogyny from the #Kaysermaleinsider! Not now, not ever.”

Another user @kedjie wrote “It’s really disappointing @kayserlingerie have stopped to sexist crap like that. Ladies, any tips on finding a new bra company.”

User @PixieKath wrote “Enlighten us please, what are they ‘expecting’ @jointdestroyer”.

The tweet was made at 11.30 this morning.

Kayser’s social media accounts are run by an external company that declined to be named.

The social media manager told News.com.au that the tweets were posted by a male intern and that the tweet was totally meant to be “tongue in cheek.”

She said that they had been trying to delete the tweet all day – which at 4.00pm was still active on their Twitter account but had not had any success.

When asked what other way people could interpret the tweet, the media manger told News.com.au they thought it meant that “if a guy invites you over to watch a movie it just means that he likes you.”

“The wording came across mistakenly,” the social media manager said. “Obviously I can see how it was taken in that contex, given the short character limits it’s how it came across.”

The spokesperson said they were concerned about how the tweet would be interpreted by its customers, particularly teenagers that purchase their lingerie.

“We will be rectifying the situation immediately,” the social media manager said.

The tweet has now been removed, and was replaced about 5pm with another that apologises for the comment, and giving it the hashtag “#honestmistake”.
