Charlottesville Lingerie Store Collecting Bras for a Cause

Women in Charlottesville are helping survivors of sex trafficking in Africa rebuild their lives – one bra at a time.

Lingerie store Derriere de Soie on the downtown mall collected gently used bras Sunday in exchange for free fittings and half price purchases.

The donations go to the nonprofit Free The Girls, which sends the bras to survivors of sex trafficking in Mozambique.  In Mozambique, bras are luxury items that organizers say can turn women’s lives around.

“The women that they have helped get out of the sex trafficking in Africa and Mozambique and all of that, they will then give these gently used donations to those women who will then in turn, sell it on kind of a consignment, and so they learn how to sell as their own business and it helps them gain confidence and get them out of the situations that they’re in,” said Jennifer Summers with Derriere de Soie.

The store has already collected more than 100 bras for Free The Girls, and will continue to take donations until January.
