From a kettle you can program using your iPhone to a child’s bed that measures how much sleep your kids are getting, we’ve sorted through all the hype and buzz at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show and picked some of the most intriguing home products. Some are already in stores, while others will be available for purchase later this year. We purposely left out televisions and professionally installed security and home connectivity systems, which deserve a more extensive look.
Here are our Top 10 picks:
Smarter iKettle
What it does: Using an app that runs on iOS and Android platforms, you can program the iKettle to start boiling before you head down to the kitchen. The kettle will alert you via your smartphone or tablet when the hot water is ready to pour, let you know when the kettle is empty and remind you to refill it. It comes with four preprogrammed temperatures ranging from 65 degrees to 100 degrees and a keep-warm mode in case you want five more minutes of snooze time. The temperatures are designated for milk, green tea, coffee and black tea – no surprise given that the ikettle was designed by Brits. If you’re bored with the same old stainless steel, you can cover it with an “insulating skin” that’s available in various colors. You’ll need a transformer to bring the voltage to 220-240 volts.

LG Twin Wash System
What it does: The front-loading washer has two washers, enabling two separate loads to be laundered simultaneously. There’s a regular-size washer on top of the mini washer that opens like a drawer in the pedestal. We can see the mini washer being used for small loads and items that are small or delicate such as lingerie and scarves or require special care such as activewear. The mini washer can be combined with LG’s front-loading washers. The washer is Wi-Fi-enabled, so you can use your smartphone or tablet to control your washer and receive an alert when the load is done.

Dacor Discovery iQ 48-inch Dual-Fuel Range
What it does: Why use your iPad to guide your cooking when you can have a range that has a built-in tablet that shows you how and tells you when your dish is done? That’s the premise of this range, which features the Dacor iQ Controller, an integrated, wirelessly connected, 7-inch LCD glass touch-screen that pops up on a panel above the larger of the two oven doors. You can watch cooking tutorials and download recipes. A preprogrammed guide provides instructions for preparing dishes, and when the dish is complete, the range switches to a warming mode, and you get an alert on your smartphone or tablet. You also can download apps to customize the Dacor iQ Cooking Application. The range comes with two ovens, a convection option and a gas cooktop.

Sleep Number SleepIQ Kids bed
What it does: In this age of hovering, er, highly concerned parenting, it’s no surprise that after the baby monitor comes … the Wi-Fi-connected children’s bed that tracks sleep quality and quantity. The bed’s compelling intention: Lack of consistent restorative sleep has been shown to have a negative impact on not only a child’s ability to learn, but also on overall health.
Built-in sensors work with Sleep Number DualAir technology to control firmness and support and monitor your child’s breathing, heart rate and movement. The bed uses a full body algorithm to assess quality of sleep, assigning a SleepIQ score each night. You get a text alerting you when your child is out of the bed or restless.
Other kid-friendly features: The bed raises the pillow section for reading or to help your child breathe better when he or she is congested. You and your toddler can use your smartphone to scan for monsters under the bed. There’s a soft night light underneath for those middle-of-the-night trips to the toilet. Our take: If this bed has accurate readings, it can be potentially useful for people with sleep disorders and caregivers who want to track loved ones with medical conditions.
Price: Technology comes at a premium, starting at $1,000

Samsung Flex Duo Oven with Radiant Electric Range
What it does: It comes with two stacked ovens – one 2.7 cubic feet and the other 3.0 cubic feet – and two door configurations. You can simultaneously bake a dish in each oven, each with its own temperature, a feature that comes in handy when you want to roast chicken for the main course and bake a pie for dessert at the same time. If you’re using the entire oven, the compartment size is 5.9 cubic feet. You also can use just the upper compartment if you’re baking one dish that’s not big. You can access only the top oven or access both chambers when the Smart Divider is in place. There’s also a separate warming drawer at the bottom.

GE ChillHub refrigerator
What it does: It looks like a typical refrigerator with French doors, but it comes with two integrated USB hubs (eight USB ports in total), built-in Wi-Fi connectivity and open-source iOS-compatible app integration that allows access to sensor data and control of the inside components. Its platform enables hackers and developers to create new hardware for the refrigerator.
GE ChillHub refrigerator
The cool (no pun intended) part: ChillHub was generated by FirstBuild, a digital community of industrial designers, engineers and innovators created to bring home products to market. It’s a partnership between GE Appliances and Local Motors. FirstBuild community member Nolan McQueen conceptualized the first ChillHub accessory, Milky Weigh, which provides real-time updates on your smartphone on how much milk you have left, ostensibly so you can pick up a jug on the way home or order one online. Milky Weigh is available at FirstBuild.com, but FirstBuild posted Milky Weigh components on Thingiverse, so you can print and assemble your own device if you have a MakerBot or other 3D printer.

Chamberlain Notifi
What it does: It’s a video camera/door chime that combines motion detection, lights, notification and communication. It comes with an LED bulb that you plug into the light socket on your porch and a video camera attached to the bulb assembly. How it works: When someone comes to your front door, the motion sensor is activated and you receive an alert and photo on your smartphone. Notifi will use your Wi-Fi to transmit video to your smartphone, and you can talk to the person at the door. In theory, the product appears uncomplicated enough to install. Its effectiveness depends on whether the video transmission is clear and continuous.

Netatmo Welcome
What it does: Housed in an aluminum cylinder, this home HD security camera with face-recognition technology identifies a family member when he or she enters the house and sends the name of that person to your smartphone. It’s housed in a sleek aluminum case. The camera also notifies you when it detects an unknown face. It has a 130-degree field of view and comes with night vision via infrared LED. You can customize the privacy settings and determine whether to receive notifications or store footage. Recorded videos and identification data stay in the camera’s local SD card and are not saved in the cloud. The Welcome Tag is an optional motion detector accessory that can be attached to windows, doors, gates and mailbox lids to let you know if these are opened.

Whirlpool WED99HED HybridCare, Heat Pump Duet Dryer
What it does: It’s the latest entry in the ventless heat pump dryer category and claims to save about 40 percent in energy compared with standard dryers. It extracts the moisture out of the hot air in the dryer instead of pushing air out through the exhaust of the house, then recycles the same hot air back into dryer. Consumers in select states, including California, will be eligible for rebates on the HybridCare dryer.

Ecovent
What it does: There aren’t many convenient solutions for changing the temperature of rooms in homes with forced hot air and central AC other than manually opening and closing vents. That’s what Ecovent is attempting to address. The Ecovent system consists of vents that measure the climate of a room, plug-in sensors and the control hub. The vents open and close based on information from the sensors, allowing a certain amount of conditioned air into the room to achieve the desired temperature. You plug the sensor into an outlet, replace your vent with one from Ecovent, then pair it with the room through the smartphone app. Then you’ll be able to adjust the temperature with your smartphone from anywhere in your house. You will need to purchase an Ecovent Thermostat unless you already have an Ecovent-compatible thermostat from Nest or Radio.
Price: Depends on the number of rooms, vents and sensors. For example, one vent, one sensor and one thermostat cost $400. Ecovent is offering a discount to those who reserve now.
Availability: Pre-orders available now; shipping begins in August
