Alan Johnson ‘will not challenge Boris in London Mayor election’

Hull West and Hessle MP Alan Johnson MP insists he will not stand to become London Mayor in 2016.

Mr Johnson was the favourite with the bookies behind Boris Johnson to become the capital’s next mayor, with Paddy Power offering odds at 8/1.

He previously said he would not rule out standing in the future.

However, in a radio interview yesterday, he said there was “no possibility whatsoever”.

The former Home Secretary said: “By the next election, I will be too old anyway and, if I stand for re-election in Hull West and Hessle, which I plan to do in 2015, that means if you stand in 2015 and say I want to serve you for five years, you don’t go running off in 2016.”

Mr Johnson also reflected on his decision not to stand in 2012, saying: “I thought about it when we were choosing candidates in 2010 and decided not to, really because I am committed to Hull West and Hessle.”
