From the demure nylon to the more adventurous fishnet fabric, stockings have become synonymous with female sexuality.

And to celebrate the hosiery, lingerie giant Charnos have launched National Stockings Day all in the name of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Can-Can dancers dressed in sexy stockings gave commuters a morning treat when they stopped London traffic this morning on Oxford Street for National Stockings Day.

The lovely Charnos National Stockings Day girls braved the cold weather and put on a show outside House of Fraser to help promote the cause.

Charnos holds the belief that every woman should feel sexy and glamorous, and what better way to embrace that sexuality than with a killer pair of stockings?

The celebratory day was launched five years ago in a bid to get the nation’s ladies slipping on the most alluring hosiery while supporting Breast Cancer Care.

The day has proven to be such a success that Charnos stockings sales have risen by 34 per cent in the past two years and hold-up sales have risen by 25 per cent as the nation embraces their legs.

John Roskalns from Charnos Hosiery said: ‘The beauty of stockings is the hidden glamour that will give you a secret confidence boost. We’re encouraging women to support Breast Cancer Care and feel sexy in the process.

‘We recently surveyed over one thousand women and 93 per cent said wearing stockings made them feel sexy.

‘So once again we’re calling for all British women to get behind National Stockings Day and don their hosiery this Friday!’

THE HISTORY OF STOCKINGS

Stocking have evolved from a clothing necessity to a fashion statement over the years

Stocking have evolved from a clothing necessity to a fashion statement over the years

The stocking originally started as a trend for men and before 1590 stockings were made of woven cloth- crafted by the first knitting machines.

English churchman Reverend William Lee invented the world’s first knitting machine and started to make hosiery out of cotton, wool and silk.

This trend ran until the 1930s when stockings were worn simply for warmth but as hemlines became shorter and shorter, stockings became more mainstream and a symbol of sexuality.

Nylon was first introduced in New York in 1940 and it was a revelation in the industry. Over 72,000 pairs were sold in the first day alone, and the Japanese silk market collapsed overnight.

American department stores saw 64 million pairs of stockings sold in the first year and manufacturers could not keep up with demand.

The first pantyhose made an appearance in the 1940s and 1950s and were worn mainly in film and theatre productions.

In 1970, sales of pantyhose in American exceeded stockings for the first time, and has remained this way ever since.

Given that most women in the UK have obese wobbling legs, covered in cellulite and varicose veins, I hope they shun stockings and remain in trousers or very long skirts. – Honest Anthony, Not Sheffield, 19/10/2012 15:24 Anthony you really do not like women very much do you???
- Melissa-Jayne, Romsey, United Kingdom, 19/10/2012 16:36++++++++++++++ What’s your problem? Men are run down and insulted by you lot on a daily basis, don’t like it back do you? Most women are vile fat ugly pigs with more chins than a Chinese telephone directory.

You can always spot a British woman, there are hundreds of flies following her around.

DM do you actually know what stockings are? EVERY celebrity you have pictured is wearing tights except one, she is wearing leggings.

I see through you.

- SilentSoldier, Essex, United Kingdom, 19/10/2012 14:18 – what a sad little man you are. So this ‘nice looking’ woman didn’t warrant a second look till she flashed her stockings and THEN you noticed how attractive she was? Are women anything other then vehicles to parade in stockings for you?
- Laura, Blackpool, 19/10/2012 16:28

At least he said it in a mature way unlike some of the silly boys making smutty comments on here and certain other forums about what they’d like to do to certain female celebs. Now THAT is what’s really sad! At least this woman was an ordinary woman on a train!
