In its ceaseless effort to “provide a safe environment for working women,” i.e. keep the workplace entirely segregated, Saudi Arabia’s labor ministry has ordered about 100 lingerie shops in the capital of Riyadh to close for having male staff members.
News of the mass dude layoff comes a few months after King Abdullah issued a decree in June limiting employment at lingerie shops to women, which is part of of a wider effort to cut down of female unemployment in Saudi Arabia. Though women in Saudi Arabia are fairly well-educated, religious mandated segregation keeps many women from working in the same offices as men, which in turn has led to an inordinately high rate (about 30 percent) of unemployment amongst Saudi women.
